Creator/Founder David Hunter
Making History is the second curriculum release from David Hunter. Hunter has a Master in Teaching and is an innovative, award-winning curriculum designer and former teacher who left the classroom after designing the popular Zombie-Based Learning geography curriculum used in 2700 classrooms worldwide. He taught at Bellevue Big Picture, which was converting to 100% Project-Based Learning for all subjects and he designed 25+ original standards-based units for all of 6th and 7th grade Humanities using PBL and Understanding by Design(R) (UbD) principles. While still in the classroom, he launched Zombie-Based Learning (ZBL) on Kickstarter to better engage all learners from the disengaged to high achievers — 10 units of middle school geography curriculum using a zombie apocalypse theme, based on 2012 National Geography standards. He also authored an original graphic novel, Dead Reckon, for an additional layer of engagement for students, both launched by Kickstarter. David and ZBL was awarded “Outstanding Support for Geography Education” by NCGE in 2015.
With his cofounders, in 2014 Hunter created ThemeSpark, an online suite of teacher training tools to help teachers adapt/build their own creative, standards-based curriculum in the spirit of ZBL–for all grades and subjects. Two design modules are built, with 4500 teachers around the world currently using the Rubric Maker tool.
Hunter’s unique curriculum design methods combine the research-proven methods of standards-based learning, project-based learning and narrative themes. He is contracted with ASCD for a book demonstrating his original pedagogy entitled “ThemeSpark: Igniting Critical Thinking in Curriculum Design” to be published in 2016.
David was motivated to help improve teaching after his own poor experience in school caused him to drop out in high school. He earned both his Bachelors and Masters degrees at The Evergreen State College, which is renowned for its rigorous and progressive teacher training program. According to Bethany Spinler, his principal at Bellevue Big Picture, Hunter is “changing the face of teaching from inside the profession”.
